What is the Oni Mask AI trend?
The Oni Mask is a 10-second AI video in which you snap a paper fan open in front of your face, red smoke curls up behind it, and when the fan drops your face has become a carved red oni mask with horns, a tusked grin and glowing gold eyes. Then you push the mask up onto your head and grin at the camera. Add one photo, get a free preview still of yourself in a lantern-lit room in about a minute, then make the video in 1080p for 100 credits ($9.90).
It's our version of a template Higgsfield lists as Oni Mask on its viral page, a preset for its Seedance Pro model described as a subject wearing or revealing a dramatic oni mask (read 18 Oct 2026). Higgsfield sums up its example as a person unfolding a decorative folding fan to reveal a face painted with intricate, colourful designs. Magic Hour sells a still-image Oni Mask template too, which adds horns and glowing eyes to a photo (it showed 0 uses on 18 Oct 2026). Ours keeps the fan reveal, swaps the paint for a carved folk mask, and gives your face back at the end, so people can see who was behind it.
The mask is a folk oni, not anyone's character. Oni are the horned demons and ogres of Japanese folklore, usually drawn as hulking figures with red, blue, black or yellow skin, horns, a tiger-skin loincloth and an iron club, according to Wikipedia's article on oni (read 18 Oct 2026). Every February at Setsubun, families throw roasted beans at someone wearing an oni mask and shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!", "Demons out! Fortune in!". That's the mask we're borrowing: red, horned and a bit comic, worn for a few seconds and then pushed aside.
Is the Oni Mask trend still growing?
Early and seasonal. On 18 Oct 2026 we found the oni mask as a template on two sites (a video preset on Higgsfield, an image template on Magic Hour) and no breakout yet; expect its best weeks in the run-up to Halloween on Saturday 31 Oct 2026, and a second, smaller window around Setsubun on 3 Feb 2027.
How to do the Oni Mask trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the 1080p video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.
Oni Mask mixes
- You
- Your pet: The pet version: the same dim room of dark wooden beams and paper screens, lit red by one paper lantern, with the pet from the photo in place of a person, the whole animal sitting on a tatami mat, framed from a low angle so it fills most of the frame, with no clothes or costume and no fan. In the still it looks at the camera, a wisp of red smoke at its paws. Over the clip thin red smoke curls up and round it, and a small carved red-lacquered oni festival mask with two short horns, bushy black brows and a tusked grin forms tied with a cord on the side of its head, worn the way festival masks are worn pushed aside, so its own face, eye colour, ears and markings stay fully visible the whole time. The mask never covers its face, it never turns into a person, never stands on two legs and never grows horns of its own: at the end it tilts its head and blinks at the lens. Sound: a soft whoosh of smoke, a wooden clack as the mask settles, a small huff from the pet.
Photo tips for Oni Mask
- One sharp photo of you, face to the camera and well lit, chest up or closer: your face opens the video and comes back at the end.
- If you wear glasses, keep them on for the photo: the scene keeps them, over the mask too.
- Hair down or up both work: it frames the mask while it's on.
- One person per photo: your own, or an adult's who said yes, never a child's.
- For your pet, one clear daylight photo of the whole animal with its face visible: the little mask sits on the side of its head, never over its face.
Who to cast

Which app makes the Oni Mask AI video?
Creators put their photo into the scene with an image model, then animate it with an image-to-video model. This page does both for you from one photo: a free preview still first, then the video.
How many photos do I need for Oni Mask?
One clear, front-facing photo per person (or pet). This template has room for 2. Add up to 3 photos of each for a closer likeness.
What happens to my photos?
They are stored privately, sent to the video model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted with your video after 30 days.
What is the Oni Mask AI video?
A 10-second video made from one photo of you: you snap open a paper fan, red smoke curls up, the fan drops to show a horned red oni mask with glowing gold eyes over your face, then you push the mask up onto your head and grin.
Is it free?
The preview is free: add a photo and see a still of yourself in the lantern-lit room, fan in hand, in about a minute. The 10-second video is 100 credits ($9.90), in 1080p.
How do I make the oni mask reveal?
Add one clear photo of your face, check the free preview, then make the video. There's no prompt to write and no editing: the room, the fan, the smoke, the mask and the sound are built in. Post it with any sound you like in TikTok, Reels or Shorts.
What is an oni?
A horned demon or ogre from Japanese folklore, usually shown with red, blue, black or yellow skin, horns, a tiger-skin loincloth and an iron club (Wikipedia, read 18 Oct 2026). Over time oni have softened: oni-faced roof tiles called onigawara are meant to ward off bad luck, and at Setsubun a family member wears an oni mask so the others can drive it out with beans.
Is an oni mask the same as a hannya mask?
No. A hannya is a specific Noh theatre mask of a woman turned into a demon by jealousy, with two sharp horns, metallic eyes and a leering mouth (Wikipedia, 'Hannya', read 18 Oct 2026). An oni mask is the broader folk demon, like the red ones used at Setsubun. This template uses a red folk oni, not a hannya.
Will it still look like me?
Yes, where it counts: your face opens the video and comes back at the end when you push the mask up and grin. While the mask is on, your hair, ears and glasses stay yours around it. The free preview shows your face before you spend anything.
Is it based on an anime or game character?
No. The mask is a generic carved folk oni: red, two short horns, a tusked grin. There are no fox masks, character colours or costumes, and the fan has no writing on it.
Can my dog or cat do it?
Yes. Pick Your pet and add a photo of the whole animal: red smoke curls round it and a little oni mask appears tied on the side of its head, festival style, so its own face stays in view.
How is it different from the AI Demon Transformation?
In the Demon Transformation your own face changes: horns grow and your eyes turn red. Here your face never changes; a mask goes on and comes off, with a fan reveal and a Japanese setting.
How long is the video?
10 seconds, vertical 9:16, in 1080p: about four seconds of fan and smoke, two with the mask on, and the rest for the push-up and the grin.
Is it scary?
A little: glowing eyes and a tusked grin in red light. There's no blood or weapons, and it ends on your own grin, so it's more party trick than horror film.
