What is the Claymation AI trend?
The claymation AI trend turns a photo of you into a stop-motion clay puppet. Your face, hair and clothes are rebuilt in matte plasticine, with fingerprints in the cheeks, tool marks on the sleeves and chunky clay hands, and the puppet is photographed on a tiny handmade set as if it were one frame of a stop-motion film. People also call it the clay filter, the claymation filter and photo to claymation.
It went viral first as a filter. In early May 2024 Remini's clay filter took off in China, where people called the lumpy, slightly goofy results ugly-cute: a Chinese how-to on 7 May said it was a hit across the whole internet, and International Channel Shanghai reported the new filter trend on 10 May. Other apps followed within days, Fotor ran a Clay Filter Challenge from 18 May, and by 21 Oct 2024 Vidnoz was listing five apps with a clay effect. After ChatGPT's image update in spring 2025, how-tos from 4 Apr showed famous faces turned into claymation and then animated. By 25 Oct 2025 Mashable's Joe Hindy was calling claymation a big trend from a while back. In 2026 most new claymation how-tos were about clay video and ads; the most-watched tutorial we found, from 26 May 2026, had 99,889 views when we read it on 18 Oct.
Here you add one photo of yourself. You see a free, watermarked preview of the first look, a clay you waving in a tiny living room, in about a minute. Then you get three looks for 5 credits each, 15 credits for the set, and you only pay for photos that pass our check: the living room, a rainy cardboard street at night, and the animator's bench with a row of spare clay mouths beside you. Any of them can become a 5-second clip with Make it move, in jerky hand-animated stop-motion. Prefer wool to clay? Try the Cozy Felt Portrait. Want to be the boxed toy instead? See AI Action Figure.
Is the Claymation trend still growing?
An evergreen style, not a new wave. The photo filter peaked in China in May 2024 and had a smaller ChatGPT moment in April 2025; by October 2025 Mashable was calling it a trend from a while back, and the new photo how-tos of 2026 draw hundreds of views, not thousands. The growth is in clay video: claymation ad and animation tutorials kept coming all through 2026 (AI Village World's, 29 Sep 2026, had 4,444 views), with the biggest near 100,000 views, and Filmora refreshed its clay page on 16 Oct. On 18 Oct 2026 Google still completes "claymation ai" with "filter", "prompt" and "free". Read this as a steady search page for a lasting look. Make it move gives you a 5-second clip, not a whole film.
The Claymation looks
One make gives you 3 photos, one in each look:
- Tiny Living Room: A photograph of a handmade stop-motion claymation puppet of the person in the photo, about 20 cm tall, standing in a tiny living-room set built on a tabletop. The puppet is matte plasticine with fingerprints and tool marks visible in the cheeks, the hands and the clothes. It has the person's own face shape, nose, eyebrows, smile, skin tone and hairstyle sculpted in clay, their facial hair if they have any, and their glasses as clay frames if they wear them in the photo; it wears the outfit from the photo rebuilt in clay, in the same colours, with chunky seams. It gives a big friendly wave with one chunky clay hand. Around it: a lumpy mustard-yellow clay armchair, a little felt rug, a standard lamp with a warm glowing bulb, a cardboard window with a painted blue sky and cotton-wool clouds, a clay houseplant, and a teapot with two mugs on a tiny wooden side table. Shot at puppet eye level on a macro lens with a shallow depth of field: the puppet sharp, the set softly blurred behind it, the cut edge of the cardboard set and a hint of the dark studio beyond it at the edges of the frame. Warm lamp light plus a soft key light from the front, small crisp shadows. No text, no logos, no other characters.
- Rainy Night: A photograph of a handmade stop-motion claymation puppet of the person in the photo, about 20 cm tall, standing on a tiny cardboard street at night under a red clay umbrella. The puppet is matte plasticine with fingerprints and tool marks, with the person's own face shape, nose, eyebrows, smile, skin tone and hairstyle sculpted in clay, their facial hair, and their glasses as clay frames if they wear them in the photo; it wears the outfit from the photo rebuilt in clay, in the same colours. It looks up at the rain with a delighted open-mouthed grin, free hand held out to catch a drop. The rain is strands of clear resin beads hanging on fine threads; the puddles on the clay cobbles are glossy resin reflecting the light; a little street lamp glows warm amber; behind, small painted-card brick buildings have lit yellow windows, and a cotton-wool cloud hangs on a visible wire. Shot at puppet eye level on a macro lens with a shallow depth of field, the puppet sharp and the street melting into soft bokeh. Cool blue night light with the warm lamp glow on the puppet's face and a wet sheen on the clay. No text, no shop signs, no logos, no other characters.
- On the Animator's Bench: A photograph of a handmade stop-motion claymation puppet of the person in the photo, about 20 cm tall, standing on a small wooden turntable on an animator's workbench, caught mid-pose with one arm raised as if between frames. The puppet is matte plasticine with fingerprints and tool marks, with the person's own face shape, nose, eyebrows, smile, skin tone and hairstyle sculpted in clay, their facial hair, and their glasses as clay frames if they wear them in the photo; it wears the outfit from the photo rebuilt in clay, in the same colours, and grins at the camera. Laid out beside it on the bench: a small tray of spare clay mouth shapes in a neat row (smiling, open, an O, a grimace), metal sculpting tools, a lump of spare plasticine in the same colour as its top, a bare twisted-wire armature skeleton, and the corner of a half-built cardboard set. A desk lamp with a warm bulb lights the scene from one side; the workshop behind falls into soft dark blur. Macro lens at puppet eye level, shallow depth of field, the puppet's face sharp. No human hands in the frame, no text, no labels, no logos, no other characters.
The Claymation AI prompt
Want to do it yourself? Paste this into any image model that accepts your photo (Gemini, ChatGPT and others), with a clear, front-facing photo attached:
Create a new 4:5 photograph of the person in my uploaded photo: A photograph of a handmade stop-motion claymation puppet of the person in the photo, about 20 cm tall, standing in a tiny living-room set built on a tabletop. Style: A photograph of a real handmade stop-motion puppet on a real miniature set, never a 3D render or an illustration. The puppet is matte, slightly waxy modelling clay with thumbprints, smudges, tool marks and faint seams; hair sculpted in clay ridges and strands; eyes as small glossy beads under clay lids; chunky simplified hands with five fingers. The set is corrugated cardboard, painted balsa wood, felt and clay, with visible glue lines and brush marks. Shot at puppet eye level on a macro lens with a shallow depth of field, lit by small warm practical lamps plus a soft key light, in a cosy saturated palette (mustard, teal, brick red, cream) with a light film grain.. Keep their face exactly as in the photo (same features, skin tone and hair), natural skin, no filter, no extra people.
For the other looks, swap the scene for one from the list above. If the face drifts, add a second photo from another angle and ask it to keep the face exactly as in the photos.
How to do the Claymation trend: by hand or in one click

Here, in one click: add your photo, press Make, and get all 3 looks at once, each checked before delivery. You pay only for the photos that come out right, and any of them can become a 5-second video with “Make it move”.
Photo tips for Claymation
- One clear, well-lit photo of just you, face to the camera, from the waist up or more: your outfit gets sculpted too.
- Bold colours and simple shapes turn into clay best; small prints and logos get smoothed away.
- Glasses are fine and come back as clay frames. A hat or a hand over your face isn't.
- Adults only, one person per photo.
Who to cast
- You (the classic)
- Your partner, as a clay puppet for an anniversary card, with their OK
- A friend who would make a great stop-motion character, with their OK
- Your whole team, one puppet each, for a work intro post
Claymation FAQ
Is the Claymation AI photo free?
You can see a free, watermarked preview of yourself first. The full set is 3 photos (Tiny Living Room, Rainy Night, On the Animator's Bench) for 15 credits, about $1.40 to $2, charged only for photos that come out right.
What is the Claymation AI prompt?
It's on this page under "The prompt": copy it into any image model that accepts your photo. Or press Make here, and we run it on your photo, check the face and give you every look at once.
Can I turn my Claymation photo into a video?
Yes. Press "Make it move" under any photo for a 5-second video of it (50 credits).
What happens to my photos?
They are stored privately, sent to the model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted after 30 days.
What app do people use for the claymation filter?
It started in apps: Remini's clay filter went viral in May 2024, and Fotor, Facemoji, BeautyPlus, Meitu and AI Mirror had clay effects within months. Since 2025 many people use ChatGPT or Gemini with a prompt. Here it's one photo in and three clay photos out, with no prompt to write.
How do I make myself claymation in ChatGPT or Gemini?
Upload a clear photo and ask for a photograph of a handmade stop-motion clay puppet of the person, with fingerprints and tool marks, on a tiny handmade set, shot with a macro lens. Ask for the whole photo to change, or you may just get a clay-ish filter over the same picture. Our first look's prompt is a ready-made version.
Is claymation the same as stop motion?
Claymation is one kind of stop motion: the puppets are modelling clay, moved a tiny bit and photographed one frame at a time. Stop motion also covers paper, puppets and objects. These photos are single frames of the clay kind, and Make it move turns one into a short, jerky stop-motion clip.
What was the Remini clay filter trend?
In May 2024 Remini's clay filter turned portraits into lumpy clay figures, and it took off in China, where the results were called ugly-cute. It was a one-tap filter on your own photo. Ours goes further: it sculpts a puppet of you and builds a whole set around it, photographed like a frame from a film.
Why are there fingerprints on my face?
Because that's what makes it look handmade. Real clay puppets carry the animator's thumbprints and tool marks, and they're the difference between claymation and a smooth 3D render. We ask for them on purpose.
Will it look like a famous clay animation?
No, on purpose. The sets and the puppet are our own: a living room, a rainy street, an animator's bench. We don't copy any studio's characters, sets or style, so you won't find a famous dog, sheep or penguin beside you.
Can I do the claymation trend with my dog or cat?
Not on this one: it's made for one person. Clay filters have done pets since 2024, when a Fotor clip starred a cat, so a pet version may follow. For your pet now, see Pet Halloween Portrait.
Can I make a claymation of me and my partner or friends?
Not in one picture yet: each set has one puppet, made from one photo. Make one each and post them side by side, like a cast list. For two people in one shot, try Instant Photo Together.
Is the claymation trend over?
The filter wave was in May 2024, but the style never left. In 2026 most new how-tos were about clay video and ads, and on 18 Oct 2026 Google still completes "claymation ai" with "filter", "prompt" and "free".
