What is the Pet Halloween Portrait AI trend?
An AI pet Halloween portrait takes one ordinary photo of your dog, cat or rabbit and hands it back as the picture you'd get from a Halloween sitting with a pet photographer: your pet upright on a velvet-draped crate, lit by a glowing jack-o'-lantern, with pumpkins and dry leaves at its paws and a cool blue light catching the edges of its ears. No costume has to go on. One upload gives you three looks: the pumpkin studio portrait, a little witch in a felt hat and cape, and a haunted-house oil painting of your pet in a lace ruff, hung in a chipped gold frame.
Dressed-up pet photos were an October ritual long before AI. TikTok's ghost photoshoot trend, people posing under bedsheets with eyeholes, started on 10 September 2020 (Know Your Meme), and pets joined in: by October 2022 PetsRadar reported that dogs had taken it over, and on 24 September 2023 one owner's ghost shoot with their dog passed 29.5 million views in three weeks (Know Your Meme). The AI version grew out of the 2025 boom in chatbot photo edits. That autumn, pet owners used Gemini to picture the dogs and cats they had lost crossing a bridge of marigolds back home for Día de Muertos, a trend La Kalle said had conquered TikTok (27 October 2025). By October 2026 Zooop, MakeViral and others offered one-photo Halloween templates for pets, Miraflow published 20 pet costume prompts on 12 October, and the US National Retail Federation expected Americans to spend $0.92 billion on pet costumes this year (22 September 2026).
Here you add one sharp photo of your pet. A free, watermarked preview of the pumpkin studio look comes first, so you can check it's unmistakably your animal before spending anything. The full set is three photos at 5 credits each (15 credits), and you're only charged for photos that pass our check. Your pet's breed, face, coat, markings and eye colour come from your photo; only the set, the light and the little outfits are new. Any portrait can become a 5-second video with Make it move (50 credits): the candle flickers, your pet blinks and looks into the lens, and in the oil painting its eyes follow you. If you'd rather start with motion, Pet Halloween Costume is the video version, and Knight Cat puts your pet in tiny silver armour.
Is the Pet Halloween Portrait trend still growing?
Seasonal and climbing to its yearly peak. Pet Halloween posts build through October and fade after 31 October, which is a Saturday this year. On 18 October 2026 Google completed "ai dog halloween", "dog halloween ai prompt", "halloween pet portraits", "dog halloween portraits" and "pet halloween photoshoot", and Zooop's portrait template showed 405 uses. There's no single viral post behind it: dressed-up pet photos come back every autumn, and the AI version took off in 2025.
The Pet Halloween Portrait looks
One make gives you 3 photos, one in each look:
- Pumpkin studio: Vertical 4:5 studio portrait photo taken at the pet's eye level. The pet from the photo, the whole animal with its own breed, face, coat colour, markings, body size and eye colour, sits upright on an old wooden crate draped with a moss-green velvet cloth, facing the camera with its ears up and its eyes looking into the lens. No costume: just the pet, wearing its own collar only if it has one in the photo. A carved jack-o'-lantern glows on the crate beside it and throws warm orange light across its fur and face; small uncarved pumpkins in orange, white and green sit by its paws among dry oak leaves and a few stalks of dried wheat. Behind it, a plain charcoal studio backdrop with a faint haze, and a cool blue rim light from behind that outlines its ears and the edges of its fur. 85 mm lens look, shallow depth of field, crisp fur detail, catchlights in its eyes. Photoreal. Exactly one animal, no people, no text, no logos.
- Little witch: Vertical 4:5 studio portrait photo taken at the pet's eye level, on the same dark set. The pet from the photo, the whole animal with its own breed, face, coat colour, markings, body size and eye colour, sits upright on the velvet-draped crate looking into the lens, wearing a small pointed black felt witch hat with a narrow orange band, set slightly crooked between its ears on a thin elastic, and a short black felt cape lined in deep plum, tied at the neck with a ribbon. Its face, eyes and ears stay uncovered. Beside it, a small black iron pot with a wisp of pale mist and a short twig broom leaning on the crate; a carved jack-o'-lantern glows on the other side and lights its fur warm orange. Behind it, a charcoal backdrop with a pale crescent moon painted on it, softly out of focus, and a cool blue rim light on its ears. Photoreal, plain handmade felt with visible stitching, no prints. Exactly one animal, no people, no text, no logos, no characters.
- Haunted oil portrait: Vertical 4:5 photo of an old oil painting hanging in a candlelit old house at night. The painting fills most of the frame inside a heavy, chipped gilt frame. In it, the pet from the photo, the whole animal with its own breed, face, coat colour, markings and eye colour faithfully painted, sits upright on a dark red velvet cushion like the subject of a grand old family portrait, wearing a stiff white lace ruff around its neck, set against a dark brown painted background. Visible brushstrokes, fine cracks in the old varnish and a warm, slightly yellowed glaze; the pet's eyes are bright and look straight out of the painting. Around the frame, dark green damask wallpaper, a thin cobweb across one top corner of the frame, and a lit three-armed brass candlestick at the lower edge throwing warm, flickering light up across the canvas. Exactly one animal, no people, no text, no plaque lettering, no logos.

Create a new 4:5 photograph of the person in my uploaded photo: Vertical 4:5 studio portrait photo taken at the pet's eye level. No costume: just the pet, wearing its own collar only if it has one in the photo. Photoreal. Exactly one animal, no people, no text, no logos. Style: A polished Halloween pet portrait: framed at the animal's own eye level, 85 mm look, shallow depth of field, warm candle-orange key light from a jack-o'-lantern or candles with a cool blue rim light from behind, a deep charcoal backdrop, an autumn palette of pumpkin orange, black, moss green and plum, fine fur detail and bright catchlights in the eyes. The first two looks are photographs; the third is the same sitting rendered as an old oil painting.. Keep their face exactly as in the photo (same features, skin tone and hair), natural skin, no filter, no extra people.
For the other looks, swap the scene for one from the list above. If the face drifts, add a second photo from another angle and ask it to keep the face exactly as in the photos.

Photo tips for Pet Halloween Portrait
- One sharp photo of one pet, face visible and well lit, eyes open
- Sitting or standing shows its shape; a curled-up nap hides it
- Black cats and dark dogs: use a bright daylight photo, because the set is dark and the witch's hat and cape are black
- No other animals or people in the shot, and no heavy filters: the coat colour comes from your photo
Who to cast
- Your dog
- Your cat
- A rabbit, guinea pig, ferret or any pet with a clear face photo
Pet Halloween Portrait FAQ
Is the Pet Halloween Portrait AI photo free?
You can see a free, watermarked preview of yourself first. The full set is 3 photos (Pumpkin studio, Little witch, Haunted oil portrait) for 15 credits, about $1.40 to $2, charged only for photos that come out right.
What is the Pet Halloween Portrait AI prompt?
It's on this page under "The prompt": copy it into any image model that accepts your photo. Or press Make here, and we run it on your photo, check the face and give you every look at once.
Can I turn my Pet Halloween Portrait photo into a video?
Yes. Press "Make it move" under any photo for a 5-second video of it (50 credits).
What happens to my photos?
They are stored privately, sent to the model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted after 30 days.
How do I make an AI Halloween portrait of my dog with ChatGPT or Gemini?
Upload a sharp photo of your dog and paste a detailed prompt: the set, the light, any outfit, and a line telling it to keep the breed, coat, markings and eye colour exactly as they are. The first look on this page is a full prompt you can copy. Or add the photo here and all three looks come back together, with no prompt to write.
Does my pet have to wear a costume?
No. The first look is a costume-free studio portrait, which suits pets who won't keep a hat on in real life either. The little witch adds a small felt hat and cape and the oil painting adds a lace ruff, all drawn in, so nobody has to sit still for a fitting.
Does it work for cats and other pets?
Yes: cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and most animals with a clear face photo. Black cats and dark dogs need a bright photo, because the set is dark and the witch's hat and cape are black.
Can I put two pets, or me and my pet, in one portrait?
Not in this one. It's one animal per portrait, which keeps each pet's likeness accurate. Make one for each pet and post them side by side.
What's the difference between this and Pet Halloween Costume?
This one gives you photos: three still portraits from one upload. Pet Halloween Costume is a 5-second video of your pet in a felt costume between two jack-o'-lanterns. Any portrait here can also become a short video with Make it move.
Will it still look like my pet?
It should. The whole animal comes from your photo: breed, face, coat colour, markings, size and eye colour, on four paws with its face uncovered. Check the free preview before you pay; if it isn't quite your pet, a sharper, brighter photo usually fixes it.
Is the AI pet Halloween trend over?
Not this year. It builds through October and fades after Halloween, Saturday 31 October 2026, then comes back every autumn.
Where did the AI pet Halloween trend start?
There's no single first post. Pets in costumes have been an October habit for years, from dogs taking over TikTok's ghost photoshoot in 2022 to a dog's 29.5-million-view bedsheet shoot in 2023. The AI portrait version took off in 2025, when owners started editing pet photos with chatbots for Halloween and Día de Muertos.
