What is the Cozy Felt Portrait AI trend?
The AI felt portrait trend remakes a photo of you as if someone had needle-felted it from wool: fuzzy fibres, tiny hand stitches, chunky knit clothes and warm window light, photographed close up like a real handmade piece. Your face, hair, glasses and the outfit in your photo carry over, so it's clearly you, only softer. Here you upload one selfie and get three felted versions.
Felt is old; the AI version is new. Wool felt is one of the oldest known textiles, with felt hats dated to about 1800 BCE, and needle felting builds shapes by jabbing loose wool with notched needles until the fibres tangle and lock (Wikipedia). It follows the 2025 craze for toy versions of yourself: in April 2025 people were turning selfies into dolls and action figures with AI image tools (NBC New York, 14 Apr 2025). A prompt gallery, carat.im, shares felt wool doll and needle-felted miniature prompts, and worldwide Google searches for "felt filter" (a term that also covers felt filter material, so a rough signal) jumped in February 2026 and had their best week from 12 to 18 Apr 2026 (Google Trends, read 18 Oct 2026). On 18 Oct 2026 Zooop's felt template had 6,304 uses, the most of any image template on that site.
Here it takes one photo. You see a free, watermarked preview of the first look, Felt Portrait, before you pay. Then you get three pictures: Felt Portrait, On the Shelf (a little felted you standing on a bookshelf) and In the Hoop (a felt-and-stitch portrait in an embroidery hoop), at 5 credits each, so 15 credits for the set, charged only for pictures that pass our check. Credits come in packs from $9.90 for 100. Any of them can become a 5-second video with Make it move, where the felt you blinks and smiles in little stop-motion steps. For the same idea in other materials, see Claymation and Chibi Figure.
Is the Cozy Felt Portrait trend still growing?
Steady, not breaking. Searches for "felt filter" rose in February 2026, had their best week from 12 to 18 Apr 2026, held through June and came back smaller in late September (Google Trends, read 18 Oct 2026). The first two October weeks read near zero, but unrelated AI filter searches fell the same week, so we treat that as a possible change in Google's data rather than the end. Use says it's alive: on 18 Oct 2026 Zooop's felt template had 6,304 uses, more than any other image template there. Felt is a cosy, wintry look, so we expect it to do well as a gift in the run-up to Christmas, but that's our guess, not data.
The Cozy Felt Portrait looks
One make gives you 3 photos, one in each look:
- Felt Portrait: A close-up photograph of a needle-felted wool portrait of the person from the photo, head and shoulders, turned slightly to one side. They're sculpted entirely from matted wool: their own face shape, skin tone, hairstyle and hair colour, eyebrows, facial hair and glasses, rebuilt in soft wool with fuzzy stray fibres and tiny embroidered details for the brows, lashes and lips. The eyes are felted in their own eye colour with a small glint of light. The top from their photo is recreated in chunky knitted wool in its own colours. A calm, warm expression with a slight smile. Behind them, a flat sheet of sage-green felt. Warm window light from the left, soft shadows that show every fibre, shallow depth of field, cosy creamy tones. It looks like a real handmade piece photographed in a studio. No text, no labels, no logos.
- On the Shelf: A close-up photograph of a small needle-felted wool figure of the person from the photo, about 15 cm tall, standing full length on a wooden bookshelf. Their face, hair, facial hair and glasses are felted so they're recognisable at a glance, with adult proportions, slightly rounded and soft. The outfit from their photo is rebuilt in tiny knitted and felt pieces. One hand gives a small wave. Beside them, a little terracotta pot with a felted succulent and two small balls of yarn. Behind, out-of-focus book spines with no readable titles. Warm afternoon light from a window on the right, shallow depth of field, cosy creamy tones. No text, labels or logos.
- In the Hoop: A top-down photograph of a wooden embroidery hoop lying on a natural linen tablecloth. Stretched in the hoop is a flat portrait of the person from the photo made of layered cut felt and fine hand embroidery: their face, hairstyle, hair colour, facial hair and glasses in felt shapes with small running stitches, the top from their photo in felt in its own colours, on a mustard-yellow felt background inside the hoop. Around the hoop: a pincushion, a few spools of thread, small wool scraps and a pair of small scissors. Soft, even daylight, gentle shadows, warm neutral tones. No text, brand labels or logos.

Create a new 4:5 photograph of the person in my uploaded photo: A close-up photograph of a needle-felted wool portrait of the person from the photo, head and shoulders, turned slightly to one side. Behind them, a flat sheet of sage-green felt. Warm window light from the left, soft shadows that show every fibre, shallow depth of field, cosy creamy tones. It looks like a real handmade piece photographed in a studio. No text, no labels, no logos. Style: Close-up photograph of a real handmade needle-felted wool piece. Everything is made of matted wool roving with a soft fuzzy halo of stray fibres and visible needle texture; tiny embroidered stitches pick out brows, lashes, lips and seams; clothing is chunky knit or cut felt. Warm, soft window light from one side throws gentle shadows across the fibres; shallow depth of field; a creamy, cosy palette of oatmeal, sage, mustard and rust. It must look like a physical object photographed in a studio, not a filter over a photo and not a 3D render.. Keep their face exactly as in the photo (same features, skin tone and hair), natural skin, no filter, no extra people.
For the other looks, swap the scene for one from the list above. If the face drifts, add a second photo from another angle and ask it to keep the face exactly as in the photos.

Photo tips for Cozy Felt Portrait
- Head and shoulders, with your face filling a good part of the frame: felt keeps less detail than a photo, so give it a big, clear face.
- Light from one side, like a window, comes out best; avoid strong light behind you.
- Skip portrait mode with a heavily blurred background; a plain background works better.
- One person. Glasses and beards felt well.
Who to cast
- You
- Your partner, as an anniversary present
- Your mum or dad, for a birthday card
- Your grandparents, for the mantelpiece
Cozy Felt Portrait FAQ
Is the Cozy Felt Portrait AI photo free?

What is the Cozy Felt Portrait AI prompt?

Can I turn my Cozy Felt Portrait photo into a video?

They are stored privately, sent to the model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted after 30 days.
What is the AI felt portrait trend?
A photo trend that remakes you as a needle-felted wool piece: fuzzy fibres, little stitches and knitted clothes, photographed close up in warm light. Your face, hair and glasses carry over, so it still looks like you.
Which app makes AI felt portraits?
Template sites like this one and Zooop make it from one photo, with no prompt to write. You can also ask a chatbot that edits images, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, with a photo and a prompt; results vary more from one try to the next.
How do I turn my photo into needle felt on ChatGPT or Gemini?
Upload a clear head-and-shoulders photo and paste the first look's prompt from this page. Ask it to keep your face, eye colour, hair and glasses, to make everything from matted wool with visible fibres, and to light it from one side like a window. If it gives you button eyes, ask for your own eyes felted in.
Can I make a felt portrait of my dog or cat?
Not on this template: it's made for a person. Felt pet portraits are a popular craft, and Google suggests "felt portraits of dogs" and "felt portrait of cat". For an AI picture of your pet, try Pet Halloween Portrait.
Can I make one of me and my partner together?
Each picture is one person, so the easy way is one photo each, which makes a matching pair. For the two of you in the same frame, Instant Photo Together is our two-person photo template.
Is it a real handmade felt portrait?
No. It's an AI picture made to look like a handmade felt piece, and we'll never pretend otherwise. If you want a real one to hold, needle-felt artists take commissions, which is what most "felt portrait" searches on Google are about.
Will it still look like me?
It should, and the free preview is where you check. Felt softens features, so the likeness comes from your face shape, hairline, hair colour, eye colour, beard and glasses, all of which we keep. A clear, big, side-lit face in your photo helps most.
Where did the felt trend start?
We couldn't find one first post. It follows the April 2025 wave of AI dolls and action figures, and searches for "felt filter" first jumped in February 2026 and peaked in mid-April 2026 (Google Trends, read 18 Oct 2026).
Is the felt filter trend over?
Not yet, as far as we can tell. Searches came back in September 2026 after a quiet summer, and Zooop's felt template is its most-used image template on 18 Oct 2026. Early October reads near zero on Google, but so do other AI filter searches that week.
