There's no single viral post behind it. It's an app effect that keeps getting rebuilt. FaceApp, out on iOS in January 2017, could already put a smile on the face in a still photo that month, The Verge reported. In February 2021 MyHeritage's Deep Nostalgia made old portraits smile, blink and turn their heads, and it took off on Twitter at the end of that month. The first AI laughing effect we could date is Pollo AI's "AI Laughing Face Effect", online by 27 Feb 2025: one photo, a calm face, then a big open-mouthed laugh. insMind's was online by October 2025 and says it works on pet photos too. ClipTrend's "AI Laughing Generator", a 6-second clip for one person or a group, was in its sitemap by 12 Oct 2026. People rarely call it a trend. They search for what they want done: on 18 Oct 2026 Google completes "make photo laugh" with ai, video, free and online, and suggests "make image laugh" and "make my photo laugh" too.
