The gender swap AI trend is a short video of your own face turning into the opposite-gender you, then back again. The part people post is the middle of the clip: the face looking back isn't a stranger, it's clearly your brother or sister, the sibling you never had.
It's an app effect, not one viral clip. FaceApp could already flip a face's gender in 2017, but the wave that made the news was Snapchat's: it added gender swap lenses on 9 May 2019, and from the next day people were posting their results, many saying they looked like characters or celebrities and others like their own brother or sister (Know Your Meme). Third-party data put Snapchat at an estimated 41.5 million downloads worldwide that May, up from 16.8 million in April (OneZero, via Social Media Today, 12 Jun 2019). FaceApp had its own gender swap wave in mid-June 2020. The video version, where one photo becomes a clip that morphs into the swapped you, is newer: on 18 Oct 2026 ClipTrend sells a 6-second one, while media.io's swap makes photos only.
