What is the Dodge Step Dance AI trend?
The dodge step is the Chinese folk-dance move that took over China's feeds in September 2026: a dancer stands dead still in a plain blue studio, then suddenly lurches sideways into a deep lunge as if something just flew at their head, and snaps straight back to the centre. Its Chinese name is 闪身步 (shǎn shēn bù), and English coverage calls it either the dodge step (CGTN) or the flash step (South China Morning Post).
It's a real move, not a meme invented online. The dodge step is a basic step of Anhui's Flower Drum Lantern dance, huagudeng, from the Huai River region, which went on China's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. The viral clip is part of a Beijing Dance Academy teaching video, uploaded in 2018 by a dance graduate who wanted to keep the course material, that sat online for years before people dug it up. By 24 Sep 2026 Chinese news put related videos at more than 600 million views, with celebrities dancing it, and by early October AI channels were posting cats doing the dodge step too.
Here you add one photo of your cat, your dog or yourself. In about a minute you get a free preview still of them standing in a bare blue dance studio; the 10-second video is 100 credits ($9.90), vertical and 1080p. They freeze, dodge sideways into a low lunge and spring back three times, then give the lens a deadpan nod. People keep their own face, hair, glasses and clothes; pets come back as themselves, upright on their hind legs with their own fur and paws. It's our own studio scene, not the original teaching video, and it has drum hits and shoe squeaks but no song, so add a sound when you post.
Is the Dodge Step Dance trend still growing?
Past its peak in China, still being made. The wave broke in the news on 24–26 Sep 2026, and in mid-October it was still on Chinese variety TV and AI cat channels. English search is thin: on 18 Oct Google gives no completions for "dodge step dance" or "flash step trend", though it does return 闪身步.
How to do the Dodge Step Dance trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the 1080p video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.
Dodge Step Dance mixes
- You
- Your cat or dog: No person anywhere: the pet, the whole animal at its own size, stands upright on its hind legs, front paws loose in front of its chest, no clothes; each dodge is a lurch sideways onto one bent hind leg and a bounce back upright
Photo tips for Dodge Step Dance
- One clear, full-length photo of you, facing the camera, well lit: the dance is filmed head to toe, so your clothes and shoes come from the photo.
- Wear what you want to dance in. Trainers or flat shoes look right on a studio floor.
- A waist-up photo works, but then everything below it is the model's guess.
- For a pet, one sharp daylight photo with its face and whole body in view; a pet curled in a ball makes its markings harder to match.
- Only use photos of people who are happy to star in it.
Who to cast
- Your cat
- Your dog
- You
- The friend who says they can't dance

You can preview yourself in the Dodge Step Dance scene free. The full 1080p video costs 100 credits, charged only when it's ready. Credits come in packs from $9.90 for 100 and work on any trend.
Which app makes the Dodge Step Dance AI video?
Creators put their photo into the scene with an image model, then animate it with an image-to-video model. This page does both for you from one photo: a free preview still first, then the video.
How many photos do I need for Dodge Step Dance?
One clear, front-facing photo per person (or pet). This template has room for 2. Add up to 3 photos of each for a closer likeness.
What happens to my photos?
They are stored privately, sent to the video model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted with your video after 30 days.
What is the dodge step dance?
A basic move from Anhui's huagudeng folk dance, 闪身步 in Chinese: you stand still, then shift your weight and dodge sharply to one side into a lunge, and spring back. A Beijing Dance Academy teaching video of it went viral in China in September 2026, with more than 600 million views on related videos reported by 24 Sep.
Is it the dodge step or the flash step?
Same move. 闪身步 (shǎn shēn bù) translates either way: CGTN calls it the dodge step and the South China Morning Post the flash step. You'll also see it written as shanshenbu.
Can my cat or dog do the dodge step?
Yes. Pick Your cat or dog and add a photo with its face and body in view. It comes back as itself, upright on its hind legs with its own fur, markings, paws and tail, and does three dodges in the blue studio. Pets vary more from run to run than people, so check the free preview before you make the video.
How much does it cost?
The preview still is free: add a photo and see your cat, dog or you in the studio in about a minute. If you like it, the 10-second video is 100 credits ($9.90), in 1080p.
Can I do it myself, with my own face?
Yes. Pick You and add one clear, full-length photo. You keep your face, hair, glasses and the clothes and shoes from your photo, and do the three dodges head to toe in the studio. With only a waist-up photo, everything below it is the model's guess.
Is this the original teaching video?
No. We don't use the original clip, its caption or the teacher's look. It's our own bare blue studio scene built around your photo, with the same idea: total stillness, then a sudden dodge and a snap back. It isn't connected to the teacher, the Beijing Dance Academy or anyone in the original video.
Why make it with AI instead of learning it?
You can do both, but doctors in China have warned that the sharp twist on a planted foot is hard on knees, lower backs and necks if you copy it without training or a warm-up. Letting your cat do it is the easy way in.
How long is the video, and what shape?
10 seconds, vertical 9:16, ready for Reels, TikTok or Shorts. The original teaching video is a landscape clip; ours is vertical so it fills a phone screen.
Does it come with the music?
No song: the video has a sharp drum hit on each dodge and the squeak of feet on the floor. Pick a sound in the app when you post.
Where did the dodge step come from?
From huagudeng, the Flower Drum Lantern dance of the Huai River region in Anhui, on China's national intangible cultural heritage list since 2006. Beijing Dance Academy teachers collected and organised its moves on fieldwork in 1973–1976, Jiefang Daily reports, and the viral clip comes from a Beijing Dance Academy teaching video uploaded in 2018.
