What is the 80s Home Video AI trend?
The 80s AI trend began as a photo: you, as you might have looked around 1985, with bright colours, film grain and flash. The moving version is a home video. A wobbly family camcorder catches you in a wood-panelled living room in 1987. You notice the lens, laugh, wave it away, then give in and ham it up for the tape, all in that soft, smeary VHS picture.
The photo trend started in Brazil. Over the weekend of 5–6 Sep 2026 Instagram Stories filled with the chain "Chat, como eu seria nos anos 80?" ("Chat, how would I look in the 80s?"), TV presenters joined in, and by Diário do Nordeste's count Google searches for "trend anos 80" rose 5,000% in a week. India picked it up from 8 Sep with the Add Yours sticker and a ChatGPT prompt asking what you'd have looked like around 1985; one Indian prompt tutorial from 9 Sep had 457,222 views when we read it on 18 Oct. Template apps and how-to channels turned the still into camcorder video within days: Starrd's "A Day in 1987" was in its sitemap on 9 Sep, and the first photo-to-video how-to we found went up on YouTube on 10 Sep. In the same week news channels in India and the Philippines warned people to think before handing over selfies.
Here you add one photo of yourself, or one each for the first-date version, set on a porch at dusk in 1986. You get a free preview still in about a minute, then the 10-second video in 1080p for 100 credits ($9.90). Your face, facial hair, glasses and hair come from your photo; the clothes and the room are pure 80s, with no brands. The sound is the camcorder's own (room tone, tape hiss and laughter) with no music. We don't draw a date stamp into the picture, because generated digits come out scrambled; add one in your editing app if you want it.
Is the 80s Home Video trend still growing?
Fading on social, still searched. The photo wave peaked 7–13 Sep 2026: most of the big how-tos and the news coverage we found went up that week, and new 80s video how-tos in October reach tens of viewers. On 18 Oct Google still completes "80s ai video" with "generator" and "trend", "80s trend" with "chatgpt" and "prompt", and "80s ai trend prompt" with "for couple". A search catch-up page, not a rising one.
How to do the 80s Home Video trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the 1080p video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.
80s Home Video mixes
- You, 1987
- First date, 1986: Replace the den with the front porch of a 1980s suburban house at dusk: the porch light on, a screen door behind, a wood-panelled station wagon with no badges or plates in the driveway. You stand on the left holding a small bunch of flowers; your date stands on the right, both in unbranded 80s going-out clothes. The beats: the flowers are handed over at about 2 s, both spot the lens, laugh and wave it off, then lean together and smile for the tape. Two adults only: no school, prom, yearbook or sibling cues
Photo tips for 80s Home Video

- Glasses stay if you wear them in the photo; none are added.
- For the first-date version, add one photo of each person, one person per photo. Adults only: no childhood photos and no photos of children.

Creators put their photo into the scene with an image model, then animate it with an image-to-video model. This page does both for you from one photo: a free preview still first, then the video.
How many photos do I need for 80s Home Video?
One clear, front-facing photo per person (or pet). This template has room for 2. Add up to 3 photos of each for a closer likeness.

They are stored privately, sent to the video model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted with your video after 30 days.
What is the 80s AI trend video?
The moving version of September 2026's 80s AI photo trend. You appear on what looks like a 1987 family camcorder tape: in 80s clothes in a wood-panelled living room, you spot the camera, laugh, wave it away, then ham it up, all in soft, grainy VHS.
Is there a free 80s AI video generator?
The preview is free here: add a photo and see a still of yourself in the 80s den in about a minute. The 10-second video is 100 credits ($9.90), in 1080p. Plenty of how-tos put "free" in their titles; we haven't checked what those tools charge.
What's the 80s AI trend prompt, and do I need one?
The widely shared prompt asks ChatGPT what you'd have looked like around 1985, keeping your face but changing hair, clothes, accessories and setting, with film grain, flash and a red-orange date stamp (BusinessToday, 9 Sep 2026). You don't need it here: add one photo and the scene is built around you.
Can I do the 80s trend in ChatGPT?
For the still photo, yes: that's where it started, in Brazil and then India, in early September 2026. Making it move needs a second image-to-video step. Here both happen in one go from your photo, with the still as a free preview.
Where did the 80s AI trend start, and is it over?
In Brazil, over the weekend of 5–6 Sep 2026, with the Instagram Stories chain "Chat, como eu seria nos anos 80?". India and the rest followed from 8 Sep. The photo wave peaked that week and has faded on social, but on 18 Oct Google still completes "80s ai video" with "generator" and "trend".
Can I make it with my partner?
Yes: pick the first-date version and add one photo of each of you. You're on a front porch at dusk in 1986, flowers in hand, caught by the camcorder. Both people must be adults.
Will I get big 80s hair?
No. Your hair comes from your photo, the same colour, length and cut, with at most a little blow-dried lift. The 80s comes from the clothes, the room and the camcorder picture. Glasses stay only if you wear them in the photo.
Does it have the date stamp in the corner?
Not in the picture itself: generated digits come out scrambled, so we leave them out. If you want the look, add a stamp such as JUL 12 1987 as text in your editing app before you post.
How long is the video?
Ten seconds, one continuous handheld shot: long enough for the zoom, the laugh and the pose. Starrd's "A Day in 1987" runs 15 seconds and cuts between scenes; MakeViral's clip runs 10.
What photo works best?
One clear, front-facing photo of you, head and shoulders or waist up, well lit and without filters, with nobody else in it. Your clothes are swapped for 80s ones, so wear anything.
Is the 80s AI trend safe?
News channels including NDTV (9 Sep), Firstpost (10 Sep) and GMA News (13 Sep 2026) warned people to think before uploading selfies to AI tools for it. Our safety guide and privacy page say exactly what happens to your photo here.
Can I make a family, school or yearbook version?
Not here. This one is adults only: no yearbook, prom or school scenes and no photos of children, even though some other sites offer them. For two adults, use the first-date version; for more trends with a partner, see couples trends.
