The earliest we found is Pollo AI's AI Shocked Face Effect, online by 7 Mar 2025 (the Internet Archive's first capture), which promises "widened eyes and slightly open mouths". Higgsfield's 'Shocked' motion preset, described as wide-eyed surprise or disbelief, "comedic or intense", was captured by 17 Aug 2025 and on 19 Oct 2026 is still listed on Higgsfield's viral effects page. Morphic's shocked face effect comes in styles including snap zoom, full reaction, freeze frame and whip turn; insMind (AI Surprised) and media.io (AI Surprised Face Filter) offer their own versions, and a small CapCut template called 'AI Shocked Effect' shows 3 uses. The reaction face itself is far older: looping GIFs are a common way to react in online messaging, and Oxford's American dictionaries made "GIF" their word of the year in 2012.
Ours follows the snap zoom style: one continuous shot, a calm start, then the shock and the push-in together, and a held face at the end. Your face, hair, facial hair and glasses come from your own photo, you keep the clothes you're wearing in it, and the setting is an ordinary bedroom so it reads like a real front-camera video. There's a pet version too, for the 'my dog when I say the word walk' kind of post: ears snap up, eyes go round and the mouth falls open, still the whole animal from your photo. The clip has a sharp gasp and no words or music, so you add the sound or the caption that sets up the shock. It's for your own photo, your pet, or an adult who agreed; please don't use it to fake a real person's reaction to real news. A steady app effect, not a breaking trend. Pollo AI listed it by 7 Mar 2025 and Higgsfield's preset was up by 17 Aug 2025; on 19 Oct 2026 at least six sites offer a version, Higgsfield among them, but the one public use count we found is small (3 on a CapCut template) and Google's completions are phrase searches like "ai shocked face" rather than a named trend.
