The Spooky Scary Skeletons dance trend: the October shuffle and its AI edits
The Spooky Scary Skeletons dance is a short, bouncy routine to Andrew Gold's 1996 Halloween song that TikTok brings back every October. A dancer's "2026 vs 2019" post from 2 Oct 2026 had 7.1M plays when we read it on 16 Oct, and this year's AI versions are mostly vampire edits under an orange moon. It isn't on Jump on the Trend, and we can't make it yet: below is why, how people make it, and similar trends you can star in now, free preview first.
What is the Spooky Scary Skeletons dance trend?
A TikTok dance that comes back every Halloween season. You film yourself head to toe, with the phone propped low as in the biggest 2026 post, and do about 11 seconds of quick, loose moves to "Spooky, Scary Skeletons": knee lifts, kicks out to each side, arms flung wide, hip twists, and a final pose with one arm up. PAPER called the 2019 original a shuffle.
The routine took off in September 2019. Rolling Stone reported that it was popularized, if not created, by the TikTok creator minecrafter2011, and the biggest 2026 post still credits the moves to that account. It has come back every October since, with people filming the routine at home.
What's new in 2026 is an AI layer. From 8 Oct (the earliest MakeViral lists), editors started posting clips of a character turned into a caped vampire, dancing the routine in front of a huge orange full moon with bats and pumpkins. Most of those star anime characters, which we won't make.

What song is the Spooky Scary Skeletons dance, and is it from a movie?
"Spooky, Scary Skeletons" by Andrew Gold, released on 20 Aug 1996. It isn't from a movie. Gold made the album because he felt there were too few fun-scary original Halloween songs, and he produced, sang and played everything on the track himself. The xylophone stands for the skeletons' rattling bones. He also wrote "Thank You for Being a Friend", later the Golden Girls theme.
People probably ask which film it's from because of a cartoon. A version of the song was on a Disney sing-along home video, Happy Haunting, cut with the 1929 short The Skeleton Dance, and in 2010 a YouTuber put Gold's original over that cartoon: the song's first viral video. What it means: it's a kids' novelty song, creepy on purpose but played for laughs, about shrieking skeletons that sneak out and won't leave you alone, sung in tongue-twisting alliteration with big words for a children's track (Intelligencer).
Which version you hear depends on the post. The 2019 dance spread on The Living Tombstone's sped-up remix, Rolling Stone wrote; TikTok lists the sound on the big 2026 post as Andrew Gold's track; and the biggest skeleton-dog post we found this October uses a house remix by Crystal Knives and Lex Allen.
How to do the Spooky Scary Skeletons dance, with or without AI
The real dance. Prop your phone low so your feet and hands stay in frame, and film 11 seconds. Bounce on the spot, kick out to one side and then the other, throw your arms wide while lifting your knees in turn, twist your hips with small kicks, then hop and finish with one arm up. YouTube's search suggestions point to slowed-down and step-by-step tutorials, the easiest way to learn the timing.
The AI vampire edits. The how-tos MakeViral summarised use three steps: an AI image edit turns a character into a gothic vampire in a black suit and red-lined cape on a green screen, an AI dance tool makes that still copy a dancer's clip, and an editor such as CapCut puts it on a Halloween picture with the moon, bats and pumpkins, cut to the beat. MakeViral says others skip the first two steps with Viggle's ready Spooky Scary Skeletons dance template.
Template sites. On 16 Oct 2026, MakeViral sold a 10-second vampire-under-the-moon clip made from one photo of you or your pet, and Media.io offered a photo-to-video "skeleton shuffle" you describe in a written prompt. In both, the dancer's body, costume and scene are generated, not taken from a real viral clip.
Our live trends work differently: we start from one real viral clip and change only the face and hair, from one selfie, keeping the moves, camera and sound. We don't have a clip like that for this dance yet.
Want the Spooky Scary Skeletons dance here?
We can't make it yet, so there's no Ask for it button on this one. We only build a trend from one real clip that lots of people are recasting, and this dance doesn't have one: everyone films it in their own room, the biggest 2026 post has a caption over every frame, and the AI wave is anime characters, which we won't use. What would change that: one clean clip of an adult doing the dance, with no caption and no borrowed character, that five or more creators are recasting with AI. If you spot one before Halloween, paste its link into Suggest a trend on the home page and we'll check it in our daily review.
Is the Spooky Scary Skeletons trend over?
Not this year, not yet. In the US, daily Google searches for "spooky scary skeletons" had their highest day of the past 90 on 1 Oct 2026 and were still at 84 and 79 out of 100 on 14 and 15 Oct. Searches for "spooky scary skeletons dance" are smaller and jumpier, but their biggest days so far were 10 Oct and 13 to 15 Oct (Google Trends, read 16 Oct 2026).
It also ends the same way every year. Since 2019, US searches for the song have peaked in October and fallen to between 19% and 27% of that in November. The October peaks have shrunk since 2019: 100 in 2019, then 79, 52, 45, 35, 35 and 32 in 2025. October 2026 is only half counted so far, so it can't be compared yet.
Stage on 16 Oct 2026: in its yearly October run, with the AI edits about a week old. Expect the dance to fade after 31 Oct and come back next autumn.
Can you do the Spooky Scary Skeletons dance with your dog or cat?
Not here yet. The biggest skeleton dog post we found this October isn't AI at all: a real dachshund puppy in a skeleton suit running around a garden for 19 seconds, posted by @boombaykennels on 3 Oct 2026, with 2.7M plays when we read it on 16 Oct. It isn't the dance either, so there's no pet clip to copy. MakeViral's template generates a pet in a vampire cape instead.
If you want your pets dancing now, Smalltown Boy Cats is live: two cats on their hind legs at a red fence scream along and dance to Bronski Beat. More on our AI pet trends page.
