It's the AI version of a Día de Muertos idea that has run on TikTok since 2025. In October 2025, El Financiero reported the 'Es su primer Día de Muertos' trend, where people post photos of relatives, friends and pets who died that year (21 Oct 2025), and Telediario explained how to make a video of a pet that has died crossing a bridge of cempasúchil (marigold) petals with Gemini (29 Oct 2025). This October the person version arrived: MakeViral's Marigold Bridge template credits an AI video by the CapCut creator @ia_chiomora, dated 20 Oct 2026, and says it had 3.5 million views in under three days and that the template passed 9,900 uses by 21 Oct (MakeViral's page, read 23 Oct 2026).
The image comes from a real custom. During Día de Muertos, on 1 and 2 November, families lay marigold petals from the door to the ofrenda, the home altar, because the flowers are believed to guide the dead to it. Ours is a quiet, photoreal version: the face, hair and glasses come from your photo and they wear the clothes from it, with no skeletons, face paint or film characters. It's a way to remember someone, not a claim about where they are. For pets, see also Pet Afterlife Check-In and Day of the Dead Pet; for something lighter this week, Skeleton Dance or the Catrina Makeup portrait.
Is the Marigold Bridge trend still growing?
Rising fast and seasonal. The person version took off on 20 Oct 2026 and the AI template sites added it within a day; the pet version has been around since Día de Muertos 2025. Expect it to peak in the run-up to 1 and 2 November and fade after the holiday, then come back next October.
How to do the Marigold Bridge trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the 1080p video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.
Marigold Bridge mixes
- Someone you miss: One adult alone on the bridge, in their own clothes. They walk a few slow, steady steps, then bend at the knees and scoop a handful of glowing petals in both hands, rise and hold the petals against their chest, and finish looking toward the camera
- Your pet: Pet version: no person anywhere. A real furry animal on four paws trots slowly along the petals toward the camera, tail relaxed, sniffs the glowing petals once, then sits and looks up into the lens as a few petals settle on its back
Photo tips for Marigold Bridge
- One clear photo of one adult, face to the camera, in good light. Waist-up or full length works best, because they walk and crouch on the bridge.
- An old photo works if the face is sharp; scan a print rather than photographing it at an angle, and crop out frames and borders.
- Group photo? Crop it to one person. Each person you want on the bridge gets their own video.
- Glasses they always wore can stay on. Take off sunglasses and hats if you can.
- Pets: one sharp photo of your cat or dog, the whole animal, eyes and markings in view.
- Adults only, and only someone you have the right to remember this way: talk with family first.
Who to cast
- A grandparent or parent you're remembering this Día de Muertos
- A friend or partner you miss
- Your dog or cat, crossing the petals back to you

What does the marigold bridge mean?
Marigolds, cempasúchil in Mexico, are the flower of Día de Muertos. Families lay a path of petals from the door to the home altar because the flowers are believed to guide the dead to it for the night. The bridge of petals is a picture of that path, and was made famous worldwide by a 2017 animated film.
Will it look like them?
The face, hair, facial hair and glasses come from your photo, and they wear the clothes from it. A sharp, front-facing photo in good light works best; an old print works if you scan it straight on. The free preview shows you before you pay.
Can I use an old or scanned photo?
Yes, if the face is sharp and not too small. Scan the print flat rather than photographing it at an angle, and crop out the frame and any other people. Very small or blurry faces can come out less like the person.
Can I make one for my pet?
Yes. Choose Your pet and add a photo of your cat or dog: it trots across the petals toward you and sits. For a pet at an afterlife check-in desk, try Pet Afterlife Check-In.
Can I put two people on the bridge together?
Not in this one: one person per video, as on MakeViral. Crop a group photo to one person and make one video each.
When is Día de Muertos in 2026?
Sunday 1 and Monday 2 November 2026. Many families also set out altars in the last days of October.
Does it have sound?
Yes, generated sound: soft guitar, rustling petals and a night breeze, with no singing or speech. Many people post it with a song of their own; add the sound in TikTok when you post.
Is it OK to make one of someone who has died?
It's your call and your family's. Talk with the people closest to them first, use only a photo of an adult, and keep it as a remembrance. Uploading a photo is your yes that you're allowed to use it.
