What is the Scientists Reveal the Hi Meme AI trend?

Scientists Reveal the Hi meme AI puts your own cat or dog (or you) into the wide-eyed close-up behind the meme that blew up on Instagram and TikTok in October 2026: a soft, warm photo of an orange cat staring straight down the lens with huge dark pupils, over the line 'Scientists reveal the hi'. How it works: pick Your pet or You, upload one clear photo, and you get a free preview still of the close-up in about a minute. If you like it, the 5-second video is 100 credits ($6.99). In the video your pet holds the stare, lifts one front paw for a little wave hello and puts it back down, then goes straight back to staring at you. The video has no words in it: add 'Scientists reveal the hi' (or your own twist) as text in TikTok, Reels or CapCut, and the bottom of the frame is left calm for it. People search for it as scientists reveal the hi cat, scientists reveal the secret dog, or the hi meme with my cat.

The picture started as news. On 16 May 2025 the BBC ran an article, 'What makes ginger cats ginger?', with a close-up of a wide-eyed orange cat as its thumbnail, per Know Your Meme. The science was real: on 15 May 2025, the day before, two studies in Current Biology, from teams at Stanford University and Kyushu University, traced the orange coat to a missing stretch of DNA near a gene called ARHGAP36 on the X chromosome (Science News, 15 May 2025). On 5 July 2025 a Redditor cut the headline down to 'Scientists reveal the secret' under the cat's face and posted it to r/Wunkus, where it passed 5,700 upvotes within a year. On 16 July 2025 the Instagram meme page cheemsitz posted a version with a dog on a couch, which passed 100,000 likes in a year, and on 17 July 2025 a repost on r/comedyheaven passed 3,800 upvotes. Then on 28 May 2026 an edit on the r/xertunposting subreddit pasted 'Hi' over 'secret', and 'Scientists reveal the hi' was born; it had passed 1,100 upvotes five months later.

There's no hidden meaning. Know Your Meme's explainer (19 October 2026) says the joke is simply the odd, wrong sentence on a serious-looking news photo, and that the memes were 'blowing up' on Instagram and TikTok. People re-caption it ('bye', other words), invert the colours, and swap in other animals: an Instagram version with a seal's face passed 13,500 likes in a day on 14 October 2026, and a 'bye' edit passed 35,000 likes in three days on 12 October 2026, per Know Your Meme. Its entry was added on 15 October 2026, and its counter read 35,086 when we checked on 27 October 2026 and 41,761 on 31 October 2026. On 24 October 2026 Google's autocomplete offered 'scientists reveal the hi cat' and 'scientists reveal the secret dog'.

Ours is a recreation of the look, not the BBC's photo. It's a real-looking video made from your own photo: your cat or dog keeps its own coat, markings, ears and eye colour, and you keep your face, hair, glasses and clothes. The setting is the meme's: a soft, warm, dim room blurred behind, a lamp glow in the corner, the eyes wide and dark. Two versions: Your pet (the one to make: the meme is an animal's face) and You (you stare into the lens and give a small wave hi). The sound is a quiet room and a soft rustle, no voices, so you can put any sound on it when you post. When we looked on 27 October 2026 we found no photo-to-video template for this meme on the AI remake sites we track. How to do the Scientists Reveal the Hi Meme trend: by hand or in one click

By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.

Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.

Scientists Reveal the Hi Meme mixes

  • Your pet: Later in the video, the wave: one of the two front paws at the bottom edge lifts, bent at the wrist, up beside the chin and close to the chest, pads to the lens, gives two small waves side to side, then sets back down beside the other paw; the pet stays sitting, a real animal with two front paws, furry to the toes
  • You: Later in the video, the wave: one open, empty hand rises from below the frame, elbow close to the body, to beside the chin, palm to the lens, below the eyes and clear of the face, gives two small waves side to side, then lowers out of frame again; the other hand stays out of frame

Photo tips for Scientists Reveal the Hi Meme

  • For your pet: one clear photo of your cat or dog, face to the camera and both eyes showing. Its coat, markings, ears and eye colour come straight from it.
  • A close-up works well: the meme is all about the face and the eyes.
  • One animal per photo, with no people or other pets in it.
  • For you: one sharp, front-facing photo of an adult, face and shoulders in good light. Your face, hair, glasses and clothes come from it.
  • Hands empty in the photo: no phone or drink. Your expression comes through, so a wide-eyed look suits the meme best.
  • One adult per photo (18+): you, or someone who said yes. Never a child or a stranger's photo.

Who to cast

  • Your ginger cat, the meme's own kind of star
  • Your dog, like the dog in the 2025 'secret' version
  • The cat who stares at you at 5 a.m. for breakfast
  • You, saying hi to the group chat

How many photos do I need for Scientists Reveal the Hi Meme?

One clear, front-facing photo per person (or pet). This template has room for 1. Add up to 3 photos of each for a closer likeness.

What happens to my photos?

They are stored privately, sent to the video model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted with your video after 30 days.

What is the Scientists Reveal the Hi meme?

A close-up of a wide-eyed orange cat from a BBC news story about why ginger cats are ginger, with the caption 'Scientists reveal the secret' and the word 'Hi' pasted over 'secret'. The joke is the strange, wrong sentence on a serious-looking news photo. It began on Reddit in 2025, the 'hi' version came in May 2026, and it blew up on Instagram and TikTok in October 2026.

How do I put my cat in the Scientists Reveal the Hi meme?

1. Pick Your pet. 2. Upload one clear photo of your cat, face to the camera, both eyes showing. 3. In about a minute you see a free preview still: your cat in the wide-eyed close-up. 4. If you like it, make the 5-second video for 100 credits ($6.99): your cat stares, gives a little paw wave hi, and stares again. 5. Post it and add 'Scientists reveal the hi' as text in TikTok, Reels or CapCut.

Does it work with dogs?

Yes. The meme already had a dog version in July 2025 ('Scientists reveal the secret'). Pick Your pet and upload a clear photo of your dog; it keeps its own coat, ears and eye colour. Dogs and cats work best, one animal per photo.

Does the video say 'Scientists reveal the hi'?

No. AI video still spells words badly, so the video has no caption: you add the line yourself as text when you post, and the bottom of the frame is left calm so it fits. That way you can also write your own version ('Scientists reveal the bye', 'Scientists reveal the snack').

Can I be in it myself?

Yes: pick You and upload one sharp, front-facing photo of an adult. You get the same soft close-up, eyes straight into the lens, and a small wave hi. Your face, hair, glasses and expression come from your photo. The pet version is closer to the meme.

Is it free?

The preview still is free, so you see your pet in the close-up before you pay. The video is 100 credits ($6.99), 5 seconds.

Is it the cat from the BBC photo?

No. It's a new, real-looking video of your own pet (or you), not the BBC's photo or its cat. We only recreate the look: the face-filling close-up, the big dark eyes, the warm blurred room.

What does 'the hi' mean?

Nothing, and that's the joke. Know Your Meme's explainer (19 Oct 2026) says the meme has no purpose: the comedy is the strange, incorrect sentence. 'Hi' just replaced 'secret' in the caption, so it reads like a broken news headline.
