The picture behind it is a black-and-white photo of the film director Martin Scorsese with both hands lifted, from a New York Times interview published on 2 January 2020, according to Know Your Meme. The words came later. In October 2019 Scorsese had said in an interview with Empire magazine that Marvel films were 'not cinema', and 'cinema' became a running joke online. The first post Know Your Meme records with the caption 'Absolute Cinema' is from 1 December 2022, on X, next to a clip from the anime Chainsaw Man. Through 2023 it became the standard reply to a great film scene, an anime fight or a sports moment, and spun off the 'Kino is served' format. Know Your Meme's counter on the entry read 567,475 when we checked on 27 October 2026, and it is one of the top 40 templates on Imgflip.
Ours is a recreation of the gesture, not the photo, and nobody from it is in your video: it's your own face, hair, glasses and clothes doing the pose, shown in black and white. There's no text in the video, because the caption is the part you make yours: add 'ABSOLUTE CINEMA' (or 'absolute football', 'absolute lasagne') as text in TikTok, Reels or CapCut when you post. There's a pet version too: your cat or dog sits up in the armchair and lifts both front paws beside its face. Is the Absolute Cinema Meme trend still growing?
An evergreen reaction meme, not a passing trend: the photo is from 2020, the caption from late 2022, and people still type 'absolute cinema meme ai generator' (autocomplete, 24 Oct 2026). It peaks around big films, finals and anime episodes rather than in one spike.
How to do the Absolute Cinema Meme trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.

- You: Later in the video, the raise: elbows bent and low at the sides, the person lifts both open hands together until each is beside the head at temple height, a hand's width out from it, framing the face, palms toward the lens, five fingers on each hand loosely spread and gently curved; then the hands stay still in the air
- Your pet: Later in the video, the raise: the pet sits back on its haunches against the armchair's back, a real animal with its own furry front legs, and lifts both front paws together to either side of its face, soft round paws with the pads toward the lens, then holds them there, still
Photo tips for Absolute Cinema Meme
- One sharp, front-facing photo of your face in good light, eyes open: your face is the one in the portrait.

- Hands empty in the photo (no phone or drink), so nothing follows you into the video.
- One adult per photo: you, or a friend who said yes. Never a child.
- For your pet: one clear daylight photo of the whole animal, face toward the camera, ideally sitting.
Who to cast

What is the Absolute Cinema meme?
A black-and-white photo of the director Martin Scorsese with both hands raised, captioned 'Absolute Cinema'. People post it to say something is brilliant: a film scene, an anime fight, a last-minute goal, even a good sandwich. The photo is from a January 2020 New York Times interview; the caption took off in 2023.
How do I make the Absolute Cinema meme with my face?
Add one clear, front-facing photo and pick You or Your pet. You get a free preview still of yourself in the black-and-white portrait in about a minute. If you like it, the 5-second video is 100 credits ($6.99): your hands rise beside your head and your eyes close. Then add the caption in TikTok, Reels or CapCut and post it.
Why isn't the 'ABSOLUTE CINEMA' text in the video?
AI video models still misspell words, and the caption is the bit people change ('absolute football', 'absolute lasagne'). So the video is clean and you add the text yourself when you post, in capitals, like the original.
Will I look like Scorsese?
No. Only the gesture and the black-and-white look come from the meme. Your face, hair, facial hair, glasses and clothes come from your photo, and nobody from the original photo appears.
Can I put my cat or dog in the Absolute Cinema meme?
Yes. Pick Your pet: your cat or dog sits up in a dark armchair, in black and white, and lifts both front paws beside its face. It keeps its own markings, face and ears from your photo, shown in greys.
Is it free?
The preview still is free, so you can see yourself in the portrait before you pay anything. The video is 100 credits ($6.99). A meme generator like Imgflip gives you the still with text for free; this is the moving version, starring you.
How long is the video and does it have sound?
Five seconds, vertical 9:16, in black and white. The sound is a soft swell of strings with no words, so you can keep it or add a trending sound in TikTok.
Is there an Absolute Cinema AI prompt I can use myself?
The look is: a black-and-white studio portrait, seated in a dark armchair against a plain black backdrop, one soft light from the front, both hands raised beside the head with palms out and fingers spread, eyes closed, chin lifted slightly. Our template turns that into a video from your photo, with your face kept.
