What is the Ghost Filter Prank AI trend?
The ghost filter prank is a phone video in which a ghost appears behind someone on screen, they turn round to check, and there's nothing there. This version is made from one photo. You're filming a selfie in a dim hallway at night; a pale grey figure with long grey hair drifts out of the dark doorway and rises up behind your shoulder; you glance back and it's gone; and when you face the lens again, it's back. It's eerie rather than gory: no blood, no lunging face, no jump scare.
The prank started as a live camera filter. In August 2022 a TikTok ghost effect, a floating, see-through figure with glowing red eyes, went round as parents filmed their children's reactions. Mothership reported on 16 August 2022 that one influencer's video of her four-year-old had 23 million views and a wave of criticism, and on 7 September a trauma therapist on TikTok told parents it wasn't a harmless joke, by which time #ghostprank had passed 165 million views. The prank came back in October 2026 with a new ghost: a grey figure with long grey hair, enormous eyes and a wide grin. Briefly News wrote up a South African grandmother who answered it by asking for blessings (posted in the first week of October), and Kavel counted 1.32 million uses of a CapCut template called GHOST FILTER on 13 October.
Here you don't need the live filter, a second clip or the person in the room. Add one photo of yourself, or of an adult who has said yes, and in about a minute you get a free preview still: you in the hallway, with something faint standing in the doorway behind you. The 10-second video, in 1080p with a generated room hum and a cold whoosh, is 100 credits ($9.90). Your own clothes come with you. Pick the dark hallway, or keep the room from your photo so the ghost turns up in your own home.
Is the Ghost Filter Prank trend still growing?
At its seasonal peak. The October 2026 wave began around 5–6 Oct with the new grey ghost, CapCut's template had 1.32M uses by 13 Oct, and on 18 Oct 2026 "ghost filter prank" is Google's first completion for "ghost filter". The 2022 wave ran from August into September; this one is tied to Halloween, so expect it to fade after 31 October.
How to do the Ghost Filter Prank trend: by hand or in one click
By hand: put your photo into the scene with an image model, regenerate until the face looks like you, give that still to an image-to-video model with the moves written out, then check the face holds to the last frame.
Here, in one click: add a photo for each person, see a free preview still of you in the scene, then make the 1080p video from it. You pay only when it’s ready.
Ghost Filter Prank mixes
- Dark hallway
- In your own room: Your-room version, replacing the hallway: the room behind the person is the one in their photo (the same walls, furniture and doors), dimmed to late evening and lit by one lamp or the phone screen; the ghost comes out of the darkest, furthest part of that room. The motion is otherwise the same

Which app makes the Ghost Filter Prank AI video?
Creators put their photo into the scene with an image model, then animate it with an image-to-video model. This page does both for you from one photo: a free preview still first, then the video.
How many photos do I need for Ghost Filter Prank?
One clear, front-facing photo per person (or pet). This template has room for 1. Add up to 3 photos of each for a closer likeness.
What happens to my photos?
They are stored privately, sent to the video model through short-lived links, never used for training, and deleted with your video after 30 days.
What is the ghost filter prank?
A video where a ghost appears behind someone on a phone screen, they turn round to look, and there's nothing there. The joke is the reaction. The 2026 version uses a grey ghost with long grey hair that rises behind the shoulder; here it's made from one photo of you.
Where do I find the ghost filter on TikTok or CapCut?
When Kavel checked on 13 October 2026, the live routes were TikTok's Effects (search "ghost") and Snapchat's ghost Lenses, plus a CapCut template called GHOST FILTER that takes two of your own clips. All of those need the person in front of your camera. This page needs only a photo.
Is there a free AI ghost video generator?
The preview is free: a still of you in the hallway with the ghost faint in the doorway, in about a minute. The 10-second video is 100 credits ($9.90), in 1080p. We don't give away free videos and won't pretend otherwise.
How do I make an AI ghost video from a photo?
Add one clear photo of yourself, pick the dark hallway or your own room, and look at the free preview. If you like it, make the video: the ghost rises behind you, you glance back, it vanishes, and it's back when you face the lens. No prompt to write and no editing.
Can the ghost appear in my own room?
Yes. Pick "In your own room" and we keep the room from your photo, dimmed to evening, with the ghost coming out of its darkest corner or doorway. It works best when the photo shows some empty, darker space behind your shoulder.
Can I prank my kids with it?
No. Every person in a video here has to be an adult, so children's photos aren't allowed. The 2022 wave of this prank was mostly parents filming scared toddlers, and it drew a strong backlash from viewers and a trauma therapist on TikTok.
Can I make one of my partner or a friend?
Only if they're an adult and have said yes to their photo being used, and you confirm that before the video is made. It's their face in the video, so tell them first. More on whose photos you can use is in our safety guide (/guides/is-ai-face-swap-safe/).
How scary is it?
Mild. The ghost is pale, see-through and veiled by its hair, it never comes at the camera, and there's no blood or screaming face. It's built to be funny-creepy enough to post on any feed in October.
Does it look like the TikTok ghost with the huge eyes and grin?
Not exactly. It has the same long grey hair and the same rise behind the shoulder, but its face stays hidden behind the hair and it has no claws. We kept it to the creepy part and left out the jump scare.
How long is it, and what photo works best?
Ten seconds, vertical 9:16, in 1080p, with a low hum and a whoosh but no music, so you can add a sound in TikTok. Use one clear, front-facing photo, chest up, in good light, with no sunglasses or hat.
Is the ghost filter real?
No. Every version draws the ghost in software, whether it's a live effect, a CapCut template or an AI video like this one. Nothing in the camera detects anything.
Is this the ghost photoshoot trend?
No. The ghost photoshoot is a real photo shoot in a white bedsheet and sunglasses, a recurring Halloween favourite that NewEngen listed again on 14 October 2026. The ghost filter prank is a video where a ghost turns up behind someone who doesn't see it.
