How to find trends on Instagram and the audio behind them

Open Reels and tap the audio name under a reel. A small arrow next to that name means Instagram counts the audio as trending, and the audio page it opens lists the reels using it. In the US, Your dashboard or Professional dashboard also has a Trending audio list of up to 50 tracks. For AI video trends, Instagram can be the early place to look: three AI trends we traced back to one Instagram reel sat there for 16 to 31 days before the copies spread (checked 16 Oct 2026).

THE SHORT ANSWER

How to find trending audio on Instagram

Instagram's help page gives two routes (read 16 Oct 2026). Both work only in the Instagram mobile app, only on a public account, personal or professional, and only in the US for now.

  1. Open Reels

Tap Reels at the bottom of the app and scroll as you normally would.

  2. Look for the arrow

The audio's name sits under the account name on each reel. A small arrow beside it marks audio that's trending on Instagram.

  3. Tap the audio name

It opens the audio page: the song or the original audio, then a grid of the reels that use it. Song pages put the number of reels at the top.

  4. Open the rest of the list

Tap the audio's place in Trending (the help page writes it as "# in Trending") to see the other trending tracks, or tap Use audio to start a reel, story or post with it.

  5. Or use your dashboard

On your profile, tap Professional dashboard (professional accounts) or Your dashboard (personal accounts), then Trending audio. If neither is on your profile, go to Settings & activity: it's Insights under For professionals, or Your dashboard under Your insights and tools.

Why you can't see trending audio on Instagram

It's almost always one of the three limits on Instagram's own help page. The Trending audio list is only in the US, only in the mobile app, and only for public accounts. So it won't appear on a computer or in a browser, on a private account, or, going by that page, in India or anywhere else outside the US.

Outside those limits you still have the audio page. Every sound has one, it opens from any reel, and for spotting a trend it's the more useful of the two.

Seeing a trending song but not being able to use it is a different problem. Instagram says its Licensed Music Library isn't open to every account type, country or region, and that changes to its licences can mute a track. Its answer is the Sound Collection, where you can still find music and sound effects. Adding and swapping sounds once you've found one is in how trending sounds work.

OUR READ, 16 OCT 2026

What an audio page tells you, and what it leaves out

We opened the original reels behind eight AI trends on 16 Oct 2026 while logged out, the way most people meet a reel from a shared link. Every reel page gave us its comments, seven of the eight gave us likes, and none showed a view count. The audio page for one of them showed more: Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" page listed 309K reels and put a view count on every reel in its grid.

The catch is what that number counts. Instagram says that when it detects a licensed song in a reel, it swaps the label from original audio to the artist and title and adds the reel to that song's page. That's where Bellvtrix's two dancing AI cats ended up, filed with every other reel on a 1984 song, so 309K says almost nothing about the cat trend. On TikTok the same clip runs on "original sound – Bellvtrix", and the trend's three TikTok sounds had about 5,400 videos between them when we read them on 14 Oct.

Bulin 47 shows a second twist. Kevin Wai's reel of the street freestyle went up on 2 Oct 2026. By 16 Oct its audio was labelled "Dame Hombro", the song Bulin 47 and Kevin Wai released six days after the freestyle, and that page had about 33K reels.

Clips with their own sound stay under the poster's name as "Original audio". Five of the eight did. Those pages are the cleaner signal, because every reel on them reuses that one clip's sound.

The audio behind 8 reels that started AI trends

Read logged out on 16 Oct 2026, newest reel first. Likes are the exact count on each reel. Reel counts are Instagram's own, rounded; where an audio page didn't give a count to a logged-out visitor, the cell says so.

How to find trending reels on Instagram

The Reels tab and Explore do show trending reels, but filtered through you. Instagram's help pages say suggested reels depend on the accounts you follow and the reels you've watched, liked or engaged with, and that Explore picks from the accounts you follow, the posts you've engaged with and your connections. Two people opening Reels at the same moment can be shown very different trends.

Instagram also says what it pushes. It favours reels that inspire other people to make their own, with starting a trend others can join as its example, and shows fewer reels that are blurry, watermarked or not original. Its creators' FAQ says it detects trends from signals such as audio and hashtags.

For a view that isn't built around your own likes, Instagram's Edits app has a tab of reels that are trending on Instagram, from public accounts, picked by how popular they are, how people interact with them, and when or where they were shared. Under each one it shows how many times it was viewed, liked and shared, with a Use audio button beside them.

Hashtags are a poor guide to what's new. Logged out on 16 Oct 2026, #bulin47 sent us to the login screen, and #aitrend opened a page of its most popular reels, headed "709K reels". All 12 reels at the top of it had gone up between 9 and 11 May 2026, in the week of the Korean baseball AI trend: fans in the stands, framed like a live sports broadcast. A hashtag's top reels can be a wave from five months ago.

The first wave is our pick for each trend: a template, a copy that spread, or a burst of how-tos. An earlier copy may exist that we didn't find.

How to spot trends on Instagram before they spread

The table splits in two. Clips posted to TikTok and Instagram on the same day were being copied within a week. Of the clips posted only on Instagram, three waited 16 to 31 days and the gas station reel more than two years, until a template or a single TikTok edit set them off. Car Jump is the exception: the idea was already going round in Hindi how-to videos, and the copies came the next day. Google is slower still: Rumpelstiltskin's film went up on 27 Aug 2026, searches for it only started rising on 29 Sep, and they peaked on 5 Oct, 39 days after the reel.

So on Instagram the early signs sit in and around the reel itself:

How to find trending reels templates on Instagram

Instagram's templates live in the Reels camera. Tap Create, then Reel, then Templates, and swipe through them; when Instagram updated the Template Browser in July 2023, it sorted templates into Recommended, Trending and the ones you've saved. On a reel that was made from a template, tap "Template by…" and then Use Template.

A template copies a reel's music and timing, and you drop in your own photos and clips. Instagram only offers them for reels with music and at least three clips, and they replace whole clips, not faces. That suits photo dumps and transition edits, but not the AI clips in this guide: the templates we found for those were on CapCut and on AI template sites, like the one-photo Lion Friend template on CapCut with 4,268,762 uses on 16 Oct 2026.

How we checked

Instagram's steps come from its Help Center pages on trending audio, reel audio, suggested reels, Explore, templates and the Edits app, and from its creators' FAQ, all read on 16 Oct 2026. We couldn't open the Trending audio list itself, since it needs the app, a public account and the US, so we can't say which of these clips were ever on it.

The reel and audio numbers are our own reads on 16 Oct 2026, logged out: likes and comments from each reel, audio labels from the reel pages, reel counts from the audio pages, and the dates on the reels a hashtag page put first. After the Smalltown Boy page loaded in full, the other audio pages only gave us their page summary, which carries a reel count for licensed songs but not for original audio. The head-start dates come from our trend pages and explainers, which list their own sources.

Every AI trend with Instagram roots that you can make here, with its Instagram and TikTok numbers side by side, is on AI trends on Instagram Reels.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

Why can't I see trending audio on Instagram?

Check the three limits on Instagram's help page: the feature is only in the US, only in the mobile app, and only for public accounts, personal or professional. Outside those, tap any reel's audio name instead: the audio page shows the sound and the reels using it.

How do I find trending audio on an Instagram professional or business account?

On your profile, tap Professional dashboard, then Trending audio, or go to Settings & activity and tap Insights under For professionals. Some licensed songs may still be off limits: Instagram says its Licensed Music Library depends on account type and region, and points to its Sound Collection instead.

Can I find trending audio on Instagram on a desktop or PC?

Not the list: Instagram says trending audio is only in the mobile app. On a computer a reel's audio name still links to its audio page; we opened them that way in a desktop browser on 16 Oct 2026.

How do you know if audio is trending on Instagram?

Look for the small arrow next to the audio name on a reel, which Instagram uses for audio that's trending. For a sound too new for that, check its audio page twice, a day apart: a sound that's taking off fills with new reels from people you don't know.

How can I see the views on other people's Instagram reels?

Logged out, a reel's own page showed us only likes and comments on 16 Oct 2026. Two places did show views: the grid on an audio page, and the trending tab in Instagram's Edits app, which lists views, likes and shares under each reel.

Why does a reel say Original audio instead of a song?

Because Instagram didn't match its sound to a song in its library. Original audio is sound recorded or uploaded with the reel, shown with the poster's name, and on a public account anyone can reuse it. When Instagram does detect a licensed song, it relabels the audio with the artist and title.

What's trending on Instagram right now?

For AI video trends, this week's trends lists each one's stage with the date we read it, and AI trends on Instagram Reels has the ones with Instagram roots that you can star in. For songs, Instagram's own Trending audio list is the source, if you're in the US.
