TikTok vs Reels vs Shorts where trends really run

For a trend, post on TikTok first, then put the same file on Reels and Shorts. We followed eight AI video trends this autumn. Four copy a YouTube upload and one an Instagram film, yet for all eight the most-played remake we could read was a TikTok post. Raindance's top remake had 50.5M plays on TikTok, while its remakes on YouTube Shorts had about 9.5K views between them (read 15 and 16 Oct 2026). Reels is the gap in our numbers: Instagram hides plays from logged-out viewers.

THE SHORT ANSWER

TikTok vs Instagram Reels vs YouTube Shorts: which is best for trends?

TikTok, for the trend itself. But each app does a different job in the same trend, and one video covers all three:

Where 8 AI trends started, and where their remakes ran

Our reads from 14 to 16 Oct 2026. TikTok and YouTube show plays to anyone; Instagram shows logged-out viewers likes only, so its column is thin.

Top TikTok remake is the most-played copy in our sample of public posts, read on 16 Oct 2026. The Shorts sums come from each trend page's view estimate (read 14 and 15 Oct). YouTube's top 20 is the first 20 search results for the trend's name plus 'ai trend', read on 16 Oct; for the two pet trends we searched 'smalltown boy cats ai' and 'i wanna love you cat ai'. It's a sample, not a census: TikTok's long tail and every Instagram play are missing.

How long trends take to hop between TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Slowly from the source, fast once the remakes start. From the original post to the first AI version can take months; from there to the other apps took days. The hops we could date:

When to post, whatever the app

The clock that matters starts at the first AI remake, not at the original, and it runs the same on every app. Google searches for our six 2026 video remakes with people in them peaked a median of 4.5 days after the first remake (anywhere from 2 to 10 days). With the first YouTube copies arriving 0 to 5 days after TikTok's, the useful days on every app are the first week or so after the first AI remake. Our data on how long trends last has the fade after the peak.

Reels vs TikTok for trends: what's different?

The trends overlap: three of our eight sources went up on Instagram first or the same day as on TikTok. What differs is how each app counts, how it handles a sound and what it holds back.

YouTube Shorts vs TikTok for trends

Shorts is the weakest of the three for a remake and the most useful for finding the original. In the 100 YouTube results we read for five trends ('hotel lobby ai trend', 'raindance ai trend' and so on, 16 Oct 2026), 57 were tutorials or explainers, 23 were the song or the source, 16 were remakes and 4 were something else. The most-viewed remake had about 270K views, and it was a wide video, not a Short. On TikTok, the top remake of each of the same five had between 1.4M and 50.5M plays.

Three things about Shorts change what you post:

TikTok's sound counts were read on 14 and 15 Oct 2026, the rest on 16 Oct. Apps change these rules often: check the date before you rely on one.

Which trend suits which app

All four post to TikTok as they are; each note says what changes on Reels and Shorts. Stages as read on 16 Oct 2026.

  1. Bulin 47↗ Rising ≈380M views · 1 person · 15s Fits all three as it is. Vertical and 15 seconds with the dembow beat built in, so it's a full-screen Reel and a Short on YouTube. It's also the one with proof on Instagram: Kevin Wai's reel had about 7.3M likes. The original was still gaining plays on 16 Oct, though Google searches for it peaked on 10 Oct. See yourself in it
  2. I Wanna Love You↗ Rising ≈55M views · 1 pet · 10s Made for TikTok and Reels. A vertical 10-second pet clip whose own sound is the trend sound, so there's nothing to add after. We found no version of it in YouTube's top results. Your cat or dog goes in as the whole animal. See yourself in it
  3. Raindance ≈200M views · 2 people · 28s Best on TikTok. Its top remake had 50.5M plays there, and the clip is wide (3:2), which TikTok shows as it is. On YouTube a wide clip uploads as a regular video, not a Short. A two-person scene on a pier at golden hour. See yourself in it
  4. Rumpelstiltskin Dance↗ Rising ≈57M views · 1–2 people · 9s Born on Instagram, made a trend by TikTok. Your video keeps the film's own music, the way the Instagram original sounded. Most TikTok remakes use Riff Raff's 'Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz' instead, which you can add in TikTok. Nine seconds, wide; play the imp alone or bring a friend as the maiden. See yourself in it

How to post one trend video on TikTok, Reels and Shorts

One video, three uploads. The order matters more than any edit.

  1. Make it once

Add a selfie (or your pet's photo) on a trend's page and see a free preview still in under a minute (up to three per trend). The video is 100 credits ($9.90) whoever's in it, plus 50 for HD, and arrives by email in about 5–10 minutes.

  2. Post to TikTok first

That's where most copies sit, so post while the trend is rising. Your video keeps the clip's own sound; where the trend runs on a different track, as Rumpelstiltskin does, add it in TikTok.

  3. Put the same file on Reels that day

Upload the file you downloaded, not one saved back out of TikTok. Every trend here is under 30 seconds, well inside the 3 minutes Instagram will recommend to people who don't follow you.

  4. Add it to Shorts if it's vertical

Bulin 47, I Wanna Love You and Smalltown Boy Cats are vertical, so they count as Shorts. A wide one uploads as a regular video unless you crop it to square or vertical first, and in a two-person clip a crop can cut someone out.

  5. Check the stage before you start

Each trend page says whether it's rising, peaking or slowing, with the date we read it. On our pages, slowing means the biggest copies have nearly stopped gaining plays.

Should I post on TikTok or Instagram first?

TikTok, then Instagram the same day. For all eight trends we tracked, the biggest remake we could read was on TikTok, and copies of a trend gather there on shared sounds, so people browsing the sound see yours next to the rest. Reels right after costs one upload and reaches people who aren't on TikTok, and a trend can be bigger there than the counts show, as Bulin 47's likes suggest.

If you only have time for one app, pick the one where your friends will see it. The video is one file either way, so the other two can come later.

How we read the three apps

TikTok plays come from public posts read with yt-dlp on 14 to 16 Oct 2026, the same reads behind each trend page's view estimate. YouTube views, upload dates and search results come from the same tool on 16 Oct 2026. We sorted the first 20 results for 'hotel lobby ai trend', 'raindance ai trend', 'bulin 47 ai trend', 'alors on danse ai trend' and 'burning bridges ai trend' by title into tutorials and explainers, the song or the source, remakes, and other; titles can mislead, so treat that split as approximate.

Instagram is the gap. Logged out, it shows likes and hides plays, so the Instagram figures here are likes on the original posts and Instagram remakes aren't counted at all. The app rules come from YouTube's help pages, Instagram's own pages, TikTok's business help pages, Meta's newsroom, TechCrunch and 9to5Google, all read on 16 Oct 2026. We couldn't confirm TikTok's current upload limit from TikTok itself, so that row gives the last changes we could date.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

Should I post on TikTok or Reels?

Both, TikTok first. In our eight AI trends, the most-played remake we could read was always a TikTok post, and Reels adds people who aren't on TikTok for one more upload. Use the same file on both, not a copy saved out of TikTok.

Should I post the same video on TikTok and Instagram?

Yes, if it's your own file. Instagram says it shows watermarked reels, and reels already posted on Instagram, to fewer people. So upload the original rather than a download from another app, and don't repost someone else's remake.

Can I post TikTok videos on YouTube Shorts?

Yes, if the video is square or vertical and three minutes or less: that's what YouTube counts as a Short. A wide video uploads as a regular one. Of the trends on this site, Bulin 47, I Wanna Love You and Smalltown Boy Cats are vertical.

Is Instagram Reels the same as TikTok?

Same format and mostly the same trends, with different rules. Reels shows logged-out viewers likes rather than plays, lets anyone reuse a public reel's original audio and won't recommend reels over 3 minutes to new audiences. TikTok shows plays and gathers copies on sound pages.

Which is better, TikTok or YouTube Shorts?

For jumping on a trend, TikTok, by a wide margin in our reads: the top Hotel Lobby remake on TikTok had 6.1M plays, ten times the top 20 Hotel Lobby Shorts remakes put together. YouTube is better for finding the original clip and the how-to videos.

How long can a TikTok, a Reel or a YouTube Short be?

TikTok began taking 10-minute uploads in February 2022 and confirmed tests of 60-minute uploads with a limited group in May 2024; we couldn't confirm today's limit from TikTok itself. Reels can run to 20 minutes, but only those up to 3 minutes are recommended to new audiences. A Short is up to 3 minutes. Trend clips are far shorter: 9 to 28 seconds on this site.
