The Gemini saree trend India's retro AI wave, dated
The Gemini saree trend, also called the retro or vintage saree AI trend, turned one selfie into a 1990s Hindi-film portrait of you in a chiffon saree, made in Google's Gemini app. It took off on Instagram in India in the second week of September 2025, peaked on 14 Sep, set off a privacy scare, and was down to a tenth of its peak by 20 Sep. It's over (16 Oct 2026), and we don't have a saree template. Below: the dates and numbers, what the scare was really about, and the video trends you can star in instead.
What was the Gemini saree trend?
A photo edit, not a video. People uploaded a selfie to the Gemini app and pasted in a prompt asking for a retro portrait: a sheer red, black or polka-dot saree, the look of a 1990s Bollywood heroine, warm cinematic light, a little grain, and sometimes flowers in the hair. Google had added the image model behind it, nicknamed Nano Banana, to Gemini on 26 Aug 2025, and its selling point was that your face stays recognisably yours while the outfit and the setting change.
It was India's own trend. At a media session that week, Google's David Sharon told reporters that India was the No. 1 country for the model's use and that the retro look was local to India (TechCrunch, 17 Sep 2025). It ran mainly on Instagram Reels and in YouTube tutorials; TikTok has been banned in India since June 2020. People still search for it under several names: the Gemini saree trend, the retro or vintage saree AI trend, the Nano Banana saree trend, or simply the AI saree trend.
Can you make it here? No. It was a typed prompt on a photo, and Jump on the Trend only makes videos from real viral clips. Our videos also swap only your face and hair into the clip, so the clothes stay the ones that were filmed: nothing here will put you in a saree.

Google Trends gives relative interest, not counts. The day-by-day dates come from our lifespan dataset (read 15 Oct 2026), the weekly levels from our read on 16 Oct 2026. Install figures are Appfigures estimates as TechCrunch reported them.
Is the Gemini saree trend safe? The mole and the controversy
Two different worries got mixed up in the week of the peak, and they deserve separate answers.
The mole. On 13 Sep 2025 an Instagram creator posted that her saree portrait showed a mole on her left hand. She said the mole is real, but it wasn't visible in the selfie she uploaded, taken in a green suit. Her reel had 350.9K likes when we read it on 16 Oct 2026, and it set off debate, in the press and in YouTube explainers, about whether Gemini knows more about you than your photo shows. None of the coverage we read showed how it happened. Experts cited by Storyboard18 said image models sometimes invent details, which feels invasive when one happens to match. Google didn't comment on her case in the reports we read.
The fake sites. The police warning was about something else. IPS officer VC Sajjanar told people on X on 14 Sep 2025 not to give photos or personal details to unofficial websites and apps claiming to make these images, because data sent to a fraudulent site is close to impossible to get back. His advice: use only the official Gemini app, and share the results with close friends and family rather than publicly.
What Google keeps. Gemini's privacy page (updated 13 Oct 2026) says that with the Keep Activity setting on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and a subset of chats is read by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, apart from your account, and deleting your activity doesn't remove them. With Keep Activity off, your chats aren't used to train its models unless you send feedback, and they stay with your account for 72 hours; Google says human reviewers can still look at them to protect its users and the public. At launch, Google said Gemini marks its images with a visible watermark and an invisible one called SynthID.
If you made a saree portrait in September 2025 and it bothers you now, open Gemini Apps Activity, delete that activity and turn Keep Activity off. How we handle photos (deleted after 30 days, never used for training), and what to check on any face-swap app, is in is AI face swap safe.
Where saree AI search stands on 16 Oct 2026
It's over, and back where it started. Weekly worldwide search for "saree ai" went from 3 at the end of August 2025 to 16 the next week and 100 in the week of 14 Sep, then 13 the week after. For the past four weeks it has sat at 2 or 3, the same as before the trend. "gemini saree", a phrase almost nobody typed before September 2025, is at 0 or 1.
By one measure it burned out faster than anything else we track: of the 23 AI trends in our lifespan data, none fell to a tenth of its peak sooner. It took six days from the peak, against seven for Ghibli-style. It was big while it lasted: on a scale where the Ghibli-style peak is 100, it reached about 14, third in that set behind Ghibli-style and the 2023 AI yearbook photos. That's a rough ratio from chained Google Trends comparisons, not a count.
Saree prompts haven't gone away, though. Over the 28 days to 16 Oct 2026, "saree ai" still drew more than twice the searches of "ghibli ai" in our comparison, and Google suggests "saree ai prompt template" and "saree ai prompt copy and paste". That reads as steady, everyday demand for saree AI photos and prompts, not a comeback: weekly search has stayed between 2 and 5 since March 2026. And on 16 Oct 2026, YouTube's suggestions for "gemini saree trend" were all for a "gemini car trend" instead.

How people made the retro saree look, and the saree AI prompt
In the Gemini app. Digit's guide of 14 Sep 2025 gives the whole method: get the app, sign in, upload your photo, paste a prompt, send it and download the result. The prompts travelled through YouTube tutorials and news guides; one tutorial posted on 13 Sep 2025 has 413.4K views.
The shared prompts asked for the same handful of things: keep the face exactly as in the photo; a named saree, from sheer red chiffon or classic black to polka dots or a small-flower cotton print; a 1990s film-heroine mood; warm, directional light with soft shadows; grain; a plain warm wall or a bench outdoors; and props like flowers in the hair, bangles, jhumkas or an open book.
We don't reprint the copy-paste prompts: they're other people's work. What made the results work, a clear, well-lit, front-facing photo, matters just as much for a video face swap; see the best photo for an AI face swap.
Why there's no saree maker on Jump on the Trend yet
We don't have a saree template yet. Our photo templates need no prompt: you add a selfie and we put you into a ready-made scene. A retro saree portrait would be one of those, and if enough people ask for it we'll add it, so suggest it: we review suggestions every day. Until then, the trends below are the video version of the same wish: you as the star of a scene that looks like it came from a film.
Video trends with the saree portraits' feel
None of these puts you in a saree, and we won't pretend otherwise: each keeps its clip's own clothes, moves and sound and swaps in your face and hair. What they share with the saree edits is the film look, with you at the centre of it. Each one starts with a free preview still, ready in under a minute.
- Raindance ≈200M views · 2 people · 28s The closest mood: golden hour and a pale green dress. The saree edits borrowed the look of 1990s Hindi films: warm light, flowing chiffon and a heroine at the centre of the shot. Raindance is a real music video with that feel: a wooden pier at golden hour, where a woman in a pale green halter dress walks down the pier and then sings to camera by the water. One of you takes her part; the other sits on the pier in the green shirt. It needs two photos. See yourself in it
- Rumpelstiltskin Dance↗ Rising ≈57M views · 1–2 people · 9s The grainy film colour, moving. The prompts asked for grain and warm, period colour; this hay-barn scene has saturated 1980s film colour and soft grain. Play the imp on your own, or bring a friend: one of you is the imp in the velvet tailcoat, the other the maiden sitting in the straw who gasps in close-up. See yourself in it
- Bulin 47↗ Rising ≈380M views · 1 person · 15s Just you, from one photo. The saree trend was about seeing yourself as the star of the frame. Bulin 47 puts you in the middle of a street freestyle under red lights while a crowd films you on their phones. Fair warning: it isn't retro, and you keep the performer's pink mesh shirt. See yourself in it
Questions people ask
What is the Gemini saree trend?
A September 2025 photo trend from India: people used Google's Gemini app to turn a selfie into a 1990s Bollywood-style portrait in a chiffon saree, with warm light and film grain, and posted it on Instagram.
What is the name of the Gemini saree trend?
Most people call it the Gemini saree trend or the retro saree AI trend. Vintage saree AI edits, the Nano Banana saree trend and the AI saree trend are the same thing.
What is the Gemini red saree trend?
The same trend in its red version. Those prompts asked for a sheer red saree over one shoulder, white flowers behind the ear, and a plain warm wall with a soft-edged shadow, as in Digit's first sample prompt of 14 Sep 2025. Black, polka-dot and small-flower cotton sarees followed the same recipe.
Is the Gemini saree trend safe?
The risk officials warned about was fake websites and apps offering the look to collect photos and personal details. In the official app, what Google keeps depends on the Keep Activity setting: with it on, your activity can be used to train its models and a subset of chats is read by human reviewers. You can delete past activity in Gemini Apps Activity, but chats already reviewed are kept for up to three years.
What was the AI saree trend mole story?
On 13 Sep 2025 an Instagram creator said her Gemini saree portrait showed a real mole on her left hand that wasn't visible in the photo she uploaded. Nobody showed why. Experts cited at the time said image models sometimes invent details, and one that happens to match feels invasive. Google didn't comment on her case in the coverage we read.
Is there a saree AI video trend?
Not one clip that people recast. When we searched YouTube for saree AI video on 16 Oct 2026, the results were mostly AI saree lookbooks and guides for saree sellers making AI model videos and ads. If a saree video clip does take off, suggest it and we'll review it.
Where can I find the saree AI prompt to copy and paste?
News guides printed sample prompts at the time: Digit's guide of 14 Sep 2025 has two, written for the Gemini app. Jump on the Trend has no saree template yet, and no prompt to write: you add a photo, see a free preview of yourself in the scene, and pay only if you want the full version.
